Learn how to attach a universal sternum strap to almost any backpack, set the right chest strap position, and adjust sizing so your pack stays stable on the trail.

Quick answer

Fit a universal sternum strap by looping each webbing end around your pack's shoulder pad or its attachment loop, then set the buckle at mid-chest and tension it just enough to stop the shoulder straps from spreading. Check the fit with a loaded pack before you head out.

Why a sternum strap is worth adding

A sternum strap connects the two shoulder straps across your chest. On a hiking pack it keeps the shoulder straps from sliding outward, which is especially noticeable on descents, in wind, or when you are moving fast with a light load. It also gives you a quick way to fine-tune how the pack sits without changing the main harness adjustments.

The trade-off is that a chest strap can restrict breathing if it is too tight, and it can chafe if it sits too high on the throat or too low across the ribs. A universal strap solves the hardware question, but the position and tension still need to match your body and load.

Where a universal strap works and where it does not

A universal sternum strap is designed to loop around the shoulder pads or their attachment points, so it can fit packs that lack a dedicated chest strap. That makes it a practical spare part for older packs, loaner bags, or any pack where the original strap was lost.

It is not a replacement for a damaged shoulder harness, and it will not add load-bearing structure to a pack that fits poorly. If your shoulder straps are already too wide apart at the chest, a sternum strap can help, but it cannot correct a pack that is the wrong torso length. Check the pack's shoulder pad width and any existing attachment loops before buying, and remember that the strap is only as secure as the points you loop it around.

How to attach and adjust a universal sternum strap

  1. Find the attachment points: Locate the shoulder pads or the dedicated attachment loops on the front of each shoulder strap. On most packs, the best spot is a loop or webbing section that sits at the same height on both sides. If the two sides are not at the same height, the buckle will sit crooked and pull the straps unevenly.
  2. Loop the webbing ends: Pass one webbing end around the shoulder pad or through the attachment loop, then loop it back through the buckle or slider so it locks onto itself. Repeat on the other side, making sure the strap is not twisted. A twisted webbing end will not lie flat and can slip under load.
  3. Set the buckle height: Position the buckle at mid-chest, roughly a hand's width below the collarbone. This is the usual starting point for a chest strap for a hiking pack; adjust up or down until the strap crosses your chest without pressing on your throat or ribs. Check the height while wearing the pack with your typical load, because a heavy pack will pull the shoulder straps into a different position.
  4. Adjust the tension: Tighten the strap until the shoulder straps stop spreading outward, then loosen it slightly so you can still take a full breath. The strap should feel snug but not tight enough to compress your chest. If the strap leaves red marks or you feel pressure on the sternum, it is too tight.
  5. Test the fit while moving: Walk, climb stairs, or lean forward with the pack loaded. The sternum strap should stay in place and keep the shoulder straps aligned. If the strap slides down or the buckle pulls to one side, recheck that both webbing ends are looped symmetrically and that the attachment points are at equal heights. A strap that stays put during a short test walk is unlikely to need readjustment on the trail.

Product facts

  • Universal sternum strap: 25 mm wide sternum strap with a side-release buckle and webbing ends that loop around shoulder pads or attachment points. The 25 mm width spreads pressure across the chest, and the side-release buckle lets you open the strap without loosening the adjustment.
