Learn how to securely mount a hip pack to the front of your backpack using side compression straps and PALS buckles. Step-by-step guide with common mistakes to avoid.

Quick answer

To attach a hip pack to your backpack, use the side compression straps with PALS-compatible male and female buckles. The Askare hip pack bundle includes everything you need for a secure front-mounted setup.

Why mount a hip pack on the front?

Front-mounting a hip pack keeps small essentials accessible without removing your main backpack. It also balances the load, especially when your backpack is heavy. The Askare hip pack is designed to attach using the side compression straps, so you don't need extra hardware beyond what's in the bundle.

What you need to know about buckles

The Askare hip pack bundle includes four 2M WB SR PALS-mount 25mm female buckles and four 2M WB SR adjustable 25mm male buckles. Note that all Jääkäri and Kantamus backpacks already include the required male buckles on the side compression straps. If you have one of those, you only need the female buckles and the hip pack.

How to attach the hip pack

  1. Prepare the buckles: Separate the male and female buckle halves. The female buckles have a PALS-mount back that slides onto webbing. The male buckles are adjustable and will attach to your backpack's side compression straps. Check your backpack first: Jääkäri and Kantamus models already have male buckles on the side straps.
  2. Attach the female buckles to the hip pack: Slide the PALS-mount female buckles onto the webbing loops on the back of the Askare hip pack. Place one at each corner so the pack sits flat against your backpack's front. Make sure the buckles are oriented so the release tabs face outward for easy operation.
  3. Attach the male buckles to your backpack: If your backpack does not already have male buckles, thread the adjustable male buckles onto the side compression straps. Position them so they align with the female buckles on the hip pack. Leave enough strap length for adjustment after connecting.
  4. Connect and adjust: Snap the male and female buckles together. Tighten the compression straps to pull the hip pack snug against your backpack. Adjust the pack's position so it sits centered and stable. If the pack wobbles, tighten the straps more. Avoid over-tightening, which can distort the hip pack's shape.
  5. Test the attachment: Give the hip pack a firm tug to ensure all buckles are secure. Walk or move around to check for any shifting. Re-tighten straps if needed. Check the buckles periodically during long hikes, especially after rough terrain.
