Set up the Savotta 1-mag pouch for AR15 or AK magazines: adjust the two-position lid, mount it on PALS or a 45–50 mm belt, and tune retention with the tuck tab.

Start with the magazine, then set the lid

The Savotta 1-mag pouch is a single magazine pouch for one AK/RK or AR15 30-round magazine. Before you mount it, decide which magazine will live in it, because the lid closes in two positions: high for AK bananas and low for more humane AR15 magazines. The low position is also quite nice for carrying a Glock 17 without optics or large lights, though Savotta notes this is not a good pistol holster.

Set the lid position first. The tuck tab and hook-and-loop closure system lets you choose high or low before the pouch goes on your belt or plate carrier. That choice affects how much of the magazine sits above the pouch and how easily you can grab it.

What the 1-mag pouch is built to hold

  • 1-mag pouch, AR15-AK: Single magazine pouch for one AK/RK or AR15 30 round magazine. Confirms the pouch is sized for one 30-round rifle magazine, so you can plan one pouch per magazine rather than doubling up.

  • 1-mag pouch, AR15-AK: The tuck tab and hook-and-loop closure system on the lid can be closed in two positions: high for AK bananas and low for more humane AR15 magazines. This is the main adjustment for retention and access height; set it before mounting.

Mount it on PALS or a belt

The pouch uses the standard PALS attachment webbing system with tuck tabs. The attachment straps can also be woven into belt loops for 45–50 mm wide belts. Choose the mount that matches how you carry.

  1. For PALS webbing: Weave the attachment straps through the PALS columns on your plate carrier or belt, then lock each strap with its tuck tab. The tuck tab works like the lid closure: press it into the webbing pocket so the claw-like shape finds its way in.
  2. For a 45–50 mm belt: Weave the straps through belt loops instead of PALS. This keeps the pouch close to the body and avoids needing a separate PALS panel. Check that your belt width falls within the 45–50 mm range before relying on this method.
  3. Before first use: Savotta recommends pressing the tuck tab with your fingers to give it a C-bend when first using a brand-new pouch. This makes the tab easier to use because the claw-like shape is better at finding its way into the little webbing pocket which locks it.

Tune retention with the tuck tab and hook-and-loop

The lid closes with a polyethylene-reinforced tuck tab and hook-and-loop. The hook-and-loop allows the pouch to stay securely closed even when half empty, and to be quickly closed without tucking in the tab. That means you can run it with the tab tucked for maximum security or rely on the hook-and-loop for faster access.

The hook piece can be covered with a sewn-in piece of loop for silent operation. If you need to open the pouch without ripping hook-and-loop, fold that cover into place. The tuck tab itself is mechanically very simple but extremely reliable compared to plastic buckles, press studs, or just using hook-and-loop.

Retention details that matter

  • 1-mag pouch, AR15-AK: The lid on this pouch is closed using a polyethylene reinforced tuck tab and hook-and-loop. Explains why the lid stays closed without a plastic buckle and how the tab can be tuned.
  • 1-mag pouch, AR15-AK: The hook-and-loop allows the pouch to stay securely closed even when half empty, and to be quickly closed without tucking in the tab. Useful when you remove the magazine and want the pouch to stay shut without fiddling with the tab.
  • 1-mag pouch, AR15-AK: The hook piece can be covered with a sewn-in piece of loop for silent operation. A quiet-open option for hunting or tactical situations where hook-and-loop noise is a concern.

Check what else fits before you commit

Although designed for a single AR15 PMAG with Ranger Plate or Finnish RK magazine, the pouch also fits all sorts of other magazines and stuff. Savotta lists examples: one RK 30 rd plastic magazine, one AK-47 30 rd steel magazine, one AK-74 plastic magazine, one AR15 30 rd PMAG with or without Ranger Plate, a Glock 17 without light, and a walkie-talkie (Savotta recommends adding an over-the-top retention cord for that use). If your magazine is not on that list, treat fit as unconfirmed rather than assuming it will work.

Fit examples from the product record

  • 1-mag pouch, AR15-AK: Fits all sorts of stuff: RK 30 rd plastic magazine, AK-47 30 rd steel magazine, AK-74 plastic magazine, AR15 30 rd PMAG with or without Ranger Plate, Glock 17 without light, walkie-talkie (recommend adding an over-the-top retention cord). Gives you a concrete compatibility list to check against your own gear before mounting.

Drainage and wear points

At the very bottom is a drainage grommet to let water out. External reinforcement webbing along the bottom adds some service life, as this tends to be where this kind of pouch wears through first. After mounting, check that the grommet is not blocked by your belt or PALS arrangement.

Color choices for your kit

The pouch is available in M05 woodland, green, brown, and Multicam. Color does not change function, but matching your existing gear keeps a low-profile look. Choose based on your belt or carrier rather than the other way around.
